Frequently asked questions
Ask the awkward ones.
Most people arrive with the same handful of worries, and a few they're embarrassed to say out loud. Here are honest answers to both. If yours isn't here, ask me directly.
The worries
Will I be asleep or out of control?
No. You stay aware and in charge the whole time. Hypnosis is a focused, relaxed state, closer to being absorbed in a book than to sleep. You'll hear everything, remember it, and be able to speak, move or stop whenever you want.
Can you make me say or do something I don't want to?
No. Stage hypnosis has done real damage to how this work is understood. Nobody can be hypnotised into acting against their values. Your judgement stays switched on, and a suggestion you disagree with simply doesn't take.
What if I can't be hypnotised?
You already have been. Driving a familiar route and arriving with no memory of the journey is the same state. Almost everyone can reach useful trance depth. Wanting to is the only real requirement, and how deep you go matters far less than people expect.
Will I have to relive something painful?
Not in the way you're imagining. Where we do revisit something, we do it with distance and with adult resources, observing rather than drowning in it. You set the pace, and we can stop at any point.
Do I need to know what's wrong before I book?
No. Plenty of people arrive knowing only that something feels stuck. Naming it is part of what the discovery call and the first session are for, not a prerequisite for them.
In the session
What happens on the discovery call?
It's a free 15-minute phone call, and I'll ring you at a time we agree. You tell me what you're facing, I answer your questions, including the ones about control, and we work out together whether this is the right work for you. Nothing is booked on the call.
What happens in the first session?
We explore what you've brought in depth: how it started, how it shows up now, what you've already tried and what you want instead. Then a guided hypnotic experience that goes to the core of it, so you know exactly how it feels.
How many sessions will I need?
The programme is three sessions of two to three hours each, with the second a week or two after the first. It's structured that way on purpose, but it isn't a guarantee of complete resolution: every person and every issue is different. If there's more worth doing after the three, we'll talk about it then.
How long is each session?
Two to three hours, every session: settling and deep relaxation, the focused trance work itself, then a debrief with insights and next steps. Leave the time clear; most people don't want to rush off afterwards.
How will I feel afterwards?
Usually calm, sometimes tired, occasionally quietly emotional as things settle. You can drive and go back to your day. Change often keeps unfolding over the following week, which is why we check in at the next session.
Practical matters
Does online work as well as in person?
Yes. Trance is something you do, not something I project across a room. All you need is a private space, a stable connection, headphones and a comfortable chair. Many clients prefer being somewhere that already feels safe.
What does it cost, and how do I pay?
I'd rather talk about fees with you directly than publish a price list. I'll go through them on the discovery call, or by email or WhatsApp if you'd rather know first. Payment is by EFT. Your medical aid may not cover non-medical hypnotherapy, and I'm not registered with any medical aid.
What if I need to cancel?
Let me know at least 24 hours ahead and we'll simply move it. Sessions are long, so a late cancellation usually can't be filled, but talk to me. Life happens, and I'd rather reschedule than lose you.
Where are you, and is there parking?
34 The Broads Street, Mulbarton, Johannesburg South, a quiet residential street with off-street parking at the gate. Full directions come with your booking confirmation.
Scope & safety
Is this a medical treatment?
No. This is non-medical hypnotherapy and does not replace medical or psychiatric care. Where something falls outside my scope, I'll say so and refer you on. I'm happy to work alongside your doctor or psychologist.
Is what I tell you confidential?
Yes. What you share stays between us. Client stories on this site are published with permission and first names only, and I'm bound by the code of ethics of the South African Institute of Hypnotism.
Do you work with children or teenagers?
Yes, with a parent or guardian's consent and involvement, commonly for exam nerves, sport performance, sleep and confidence. Get in touch and we'll talk about whether it's the right fit for your child.
Still holding a question?
Ask it on the discovery call, or send it on WhatsApp first. No question is too small, and asking costs you nothing.
